Gynecological Examination and Women’s Health Check-Up

A gynecological check-up is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate women’s health on a regular basis. It can be performed not only when symptoms are present, but also when there are no complaints at all. This is because some gynecological conditions may develop silently in their early stages and only become apparent during routine examinations.
At our clinic in Antalya, the gynecological check-up process is planned according to each patient’s age, menstrual cycle, sexual history, pregnancy history, current symptoms, and previous test results. We do not apply the same standard checklist to every patient. We first identify the patient’s individual needs and then determine whether a gynecological examination, ultrasound, Pap smear, HPV test, infection assessment, or, when necessary, colposcopy should be included.

When a more comprehensive assessment of the patient’s overall health is needed, blood and urine tests may also be planned. As physicians from different specialties are available within the healthcare facility where our clinic is located, consultations in internal medicine, urology, or other medical specialties can be organized without unnecessary delays when required.
The purpose is not simply to look for disease. The aim is to assess the patient’s current health, identify potential risks at an early stage, carry out appropriate screening, and, when necessary, include a broader health assessment in order to create an appropriate follow-up plan for the future.

What Is a Gynecological Check-Up?

A gynecological check-up is an assessment that brings together different aspects of women’s health, including the uterus, ovaries, cervix, vagina, external genital area, menstrual cycle, infections, pregnancy planning, contraception, and menopause.
Different examinations or tests may be performed depending on the patient’s age and individual needs. For some patients, a gynecological examination and ultrasound may be sufficient, while others may require a Pap smear, HPV test, assessment for vaginal infections, blood and urine tests, or colposcopy.
At our clinic, gynecological check-ups are planned individually for each patient. The process is therefore tailored according to the patient’s current symptoms, preventive healthcare needs, and general health.

Why Is a Gynecological Check-Up Important?

Some conditions affecting women’s health may cause no symptoms in their early stages. Even when a patient feels completely well, cervical cell changes, ovarian cysts, fibroids, vaginal infections, HPV positivity, or hormonal irregularities may be present.
With regular gynecological check-ups, such conditions can be identified at an earlier stage and an appropriate follow-up plan can be created. Routine examinations are particularly important for patients who have not had a gynecological check-up for a long time.

  • A gynecological check-up may include assessment of the following:

Uterine and ovarian health
Cervical health
The need for a Pap smear
The need for HPV testing
Vaginal infections
Menstrual irregularities
Ovarian cysts
Fibroids
Causes of pelvic pain
Warts, lesions, or changes in skin color in the genital area
Pregnancy planning
Contraceptive methods
Menopausal symptoms
The need for breast health assessment or referral
General health assessment through blood and urine tests
Consultations with other medical specialties when required
This assessment allows both existing concerns to be addressed and potential future health risks to be identified and managed appropriately.

How Does a Gynecological Check-Up Work in Antalya?

At our clinic, the gynecological check-up process begins with a detailed consultation. The patient’s menstrual cycle, date of the last menstrual period, previous pregnancies, history of childbirth or miscarriage, current contraceptive method, symptoms, and previous Pap smear or HPV test results are reviewed.
Following this consultation, a gynecological examination is performed according to the patient’s needs. During the examination, the cervix, vagina, and external genital area are assessed. If necessary, samples may be taken for a Pap smear, HPV test, or infection testing.
Ultrasound may be used to examine the uterus and ovaries. This can provide information about ovarian cysts, fibroids, the thickness of the uterine lining, and structural abnormalities.
Depending on the patient’s symptoms and general health needs, blood and urine tests may also be planned. These tests can provide information about signs of infection, anemia, kidney and liver function, thyroid levels, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and metabolic health.

If an assessment outside gynecology is required, consultations with the appropriate specialties can be organized without unnecessary delay within the healthcare facility where our clinic is located. When needed, evaluations by physicians in internal medicine, urology, dentistry, or other specialties can be incorporated into the same care process.
Based on the examination and test findings, an individualized follow-up plan is created. When necessary, colposcopy, biopsy assessment, laboratory testing, or referral to other medical specialties may be planned.

Gynecological Examination

A gynecological examination is one of the fundamental components of a women’s health check-up. During this examination, the external genital area, vagina, and cervix are evaluated.
The type of examination may vary according to the patient’s age, sexual history, and symptoms. If a Pap smear or HPV test is required, the sample is usually collected during this stage.
At our clinic, gynecological examinations are performed with a careful and informative approach designed to help patients feel as comfortable as possible. The patient’s concerns are discussed, and information is provided about any procedures considered necessary.

Ultrasound Assessment

As part of a gynecological check-up, ultrasound may be used to assess the uterus and ovaries. Ultrasound can provide information about the structure of the uterus, the uterine lining, ovaries, cysts, fibroids, and certain structural abnormalities.
Ultrasound assessment is particularly important for patients with menstrual irregularities, heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts requiring follow-up, suspected fibroids, or those planning a pregnancy.
Depending on the patient’s circumstances, the ultrasound may be performed transvaginally or abdominally. The most appropriate method is determined during the examination.
In addition to gynecological ultrasound, other imaging studies such as a complete abdominal ultrasound, breast ultrasound, or thyroid ultrasound may sometimes be required as part of a broader health assessment. These examinations can be coordinated with the relevant physicians according to the patient’s symptoms and individual risk factors.

Blood and Urine Tests

A gynecological check-up does not always consist solely of a gynecological examination. Depending on the patient’s symptoms, age, and overall health, blood and urine tests may also be included in the assessment.
At our clinic, blood and urine tests may be planned when clinically appropriate. These tests can provide information about anemia, signs of infection, kidney and liver function, thyroid levels, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and metabolic health.
The same tests are not required for every patient. Following the doctor’s assessment, a testing plan is created according to the individual patient’s needs.

Pap Smear

A Pap smear is an important screening test used to assess cellular changes in the cervix. A sample of cells collected from the cervix is examined in a laboratory.
This test can help identify cervical cell changes that may cause problems in the future at an early stage. How often a Pap smear should be performed is determined according to the patient’s age, previous test results, HPV status, and the doctor’s clinical assessment.
At our clinic, Pap smears can be performed as part of a gynecological check-up when considered appropriate.

HPV Test

An HPV test is used to detect high-risk types of HPV that may be associated with cervical cancer. Because HPV can often be present without causing any symptoms, appropriate follow-up is important.
A positive HPV result does not, by itself, mean there is a reason to panic. The HPV type, Pap smear result, and examination findings should be evaluated together.
At our clinic, HPV testing is considered when appropriate, and a follow-up or treatment plan is created according to the results.

Colposcopy

If an abnormal Pap smear result, HPV positivity, or a suspicious appearance of the cervix is identified during a gynecological assessment, colposcopy may be required.
Colposcopy is an examination method that allows the cervix, vagina, and external genital area to be inspected in greater detail using a specialized magnifying device. It is a diagnostic examination rather than a treatment procedure.
At our clinic, colposcopic examinations can be performed when indicated. If a suspicious area is identified during colposcopy, a biopsy may be required. The tissue sample is then examined by pathology, and the follow-up or treatment plan is determined according to the results.

Assessment of Vaginal Infections and Discharge

Symptoms such as vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor, itching, burning, pain during sexual intercourse, or burning during urination should always be evaluated during a gynecological examination.
These symptoms may be caused by a fungal infection, bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, or other gynecological conditions.
At our clinic, patients with symptoms suggestive of a vaginal infection are examined, and sampling or laboratory testing is planned when necessary. Treatment is individualized according to the underlying cause of the symptoms.

Genital Lesions and Warts

A gynecological check-up is also important for patients planning a pregnancy. Before pregnancy, assessment of the uterus and ovaries, review of the menstrual cycle, evaluation of previous Pap smear and HPV screening results, and discussion of appropriate vitamins and supplements may be recommended.
For patients who are not planning a pregnancy, contraceptive options can be discussed. An intrauterine device (IUD), birth control pills, a contraceptive implant, condoms, or other methods may be considered according to the patient’s health and preferences.
At our clinic, the choice of contraceptive method is assessed individually. The aim is to determine the option best suited to the patient’s lifestyle and health.

Menopause Assessment

During menopause, women may experience hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, pain during sexual intercourse, sleep problems, mood changes, and concerns related to bone health.
A gynecological check-up can help assess these symptoms in menopausal patients. Gynecological examinations, ultrasound assessments, breast health evaluations or referrals, and appropriate screening should also continue during this stage of life.

At our clinic, patients going through menopause are assessed according to their symptoms and overall health.

Consultations with Other Medical Specialties

For some patients, a gynecological assessment alone may not be sufficient during a women’s health check-up. Consultations with internal medicine, urology, dentistry, or other medical specialties may be necessary to better understand the source of certain symptoms or to assess the patient’s overall health more comprehensively.
The presence of physicians from different specialties within the healthcare facility where our clinic is located provides an important practical advantage for patients. When necessary, consultations with the relevant specialties can be organized without unnecessary delays.
This allows patients to arrange a broader general health assessment in addition to their gynecological examination without having to search for separate medical centers for each evaluation.

What Happens After the Check-Up?

After the gynecological check-up, the examination findings and test results are evaluated together. An individualized follow-up plan is then created according to the results.
For some patients, routine follow-up alone may be sufficient. Others may require a repeat Pap smear, HPV testing, colposcopy, treatment for an infection, ultrasound follow-up, blood and urine tests, or referral to another medical specialty.
Patients are informed about which examinations or tests should be performed and when. This allows women’s health follow-up to proceed in a planned, regular, and well-informed manner.
